Thu, 10 Nov 2011 09:46:00 -0800 Utubify - lets you watch music videos of your Spotify playlist. http://harmeijer.posterous.com/utubify-lets-you-watch-music-videos-of-your-s http://harmeijer.posterous.com/utubify-lets-you-watch-music-videos-of-your-s

How it works

Utubify is a service that lets you watch music videos of your Spotify playlist. Enjoy your playlist as it is or try it in different versions such as “Live”, “Acoustic” or “Karaoke”. If you’ve got published playlists in Spotify you can get instant access to those by using your Spotify user name.

Below are some “How-tos” using the Utubify service.

How to start watching your playlist

Utubify Search Screenshot

Paste a Spotify uri into the search field to watch the videos of a specific playlist. Or, type your Spotify user name and get instant access to all published playlists of your Spotify account.

If you want to put a twist to the results you might wanna try out the options by ticking any of the (check)boxes.

Hit the Utubify button and watch your playlist come to life!

How to copy a playlist

In Spotify, right-click on any playlist and copy the Spotify URI.

From any social media like Facebook, click on the playlist shared by your friend and copy the name of the playlist

From any social media like Facebook, click on the playlist shared by your friend and copy the name of the playlist.

How to use the player

Utubify Playlist Screenshot

Inside the Utubify player you’ll have a “video playlist” tab on the right hand side. In the tab you’ll find the videos of the songs in your playlist. Just click on the video you want to watch and it starts playing. If you want to remove a video from the list, simply click the white X of the one you want to delete. To close the tab and reveal the whole video, click on the “video playlist” tab.

Utubify Playlists Screenshot

If you typed your Spotify user name in the Utubify search, you’ll get an extra tab showing all your published playlists. Just click the one you want to watch and it will start playing. Remember to publish your playlist in Spotify, otherwise it will not show up in Utubify.

Utubify Player Screenshot

Navigate your playlist by using the tab(s) or by clicking the on-screen arrows or using your keyboard left and right. By clicking the Utubify logo you’ll get back to the search page. If you’re using a big screen TV to watch your music videos, we highly recommend to use the fullscreen button in the bottom right corner of the screen.

If you run into problems or if you’re missing a feature when using Utubify , please let us know here or comment on our Facebook page.

This project envisions a distinct approach towards moving around the United States being also a revival of the act of traveling. Why traveling at high speed? Why having the final destiny always defined? And why always departing and arriving on a tight schedule? Nowadays, everything is set and everyone is always running around. It is time to reconsider the act of traveling and start enjoying it accordingly.

The Passing Cloud  is an innovative and environmentally friendly method of transportation that doesn’t require expensive steel tracks or concrete highways. It is made of a series of spherical balloons that form the shape of a cloud. Its inner stainless steel structure is covered with heavy weight tensile nylon fabric. During the journey, It moves according to prevailing winds speed and direction at the time of travel. Since it moves with the wind, no wind is ever felt during the trip, offering the passengers a full “floating sensation”.

It’s an unique journey. The feeling of floating in the atmosphere – on top of a cloud – with an open schedule and unknown final destiny. All National Ground would be potentially covered at virtually no cost and the help of the wind. The journey becomes your destiny.

When you see some activity that you don’t want your friends to see (as shown above) click the X to the right…

Rumor2

After you click the X you’ll have the option to Hide all of this activity from your profile (and your friends’ tickers).

Flash Me Find Me is a new product, which will allow you to easily communicate with friends-to-be in a fun and mysterious way.

This idea came from a simple observation: We live in an age in which our life is going online, accessible from any computer or smartphone. We make our opinions public; we share our hobbies, preferences, pictures and even more. However for others to see all this information one needs to make it available. Our mission is therefore to make this information easily accessible, while still coded so that we are not too easy to find. It is now in print with a code that is visible on a piece of clothing or jewellery. The technical term for the code we use is QR Code.

Wed, 13 Jul 2011 07:06:38 -0700 Some instructions to improve your Wi-Fi signal http://harmeijer.posterous.com/some-instructions-to-improve-your-wi-fi-signa http://harmeijer.posterous.com/some-instructions-to-improve-your-wi-fi-signa
Reposition the router

Is your wireless router in the basement or tucked unobtrusively into a corner? You may be losing as much as half the signal. Most routers are omnidirectional, sending signals is a circular pattern like the ripples from a rock dropped in the center of a pond.

For best performance, position your wireless router in a central location away from exterior walls and off the floor. If you live in a multistory house, place the router on the main or middle floor.

Metal objects and water also will block the signal. Position routers at least two feet from things like metal filing cabinets, appliances and fish tanks.

Change the channel

Interference from other household electronics and your neighbor's Wi-Fi network can reduce your router's signal. Wi-Fi routers transmit signals on one of three channels: 1, 6 and 11 in the U.S. The default for most routers is set to 6 by the factory, but you can change it to a less-trafficked channel.

Find your router's configuration page address on the manufacturer's website. Open settings and choose a new channel. Wait a few minutes to determine if your signal has improved.

Trial and error is the only way to find out which channel is least congested.  The best channel will vary from house to house, depending on which channels other wireless devices in your area are using.

Replace the antenna

Moving the router to a central position may not be feasible because the router must be connected to your cable box or other Internet modem.

If this is the case, you may be able to upgrade the router's antenna to a so-called high gain antenna, which could double your router's signal.

Check to see if your router's antenna is removable. Alternately, your router may have a jack available for an additional antenna. Verify that the new antenna will fit your router.

Replacement antennas begin at around $20.

DIY 25¢ option

With a 12-inch square of aluminum foil, some glue and a piece of cardboard, you can make your own device to rival a new high gain antenna. The flexible parabolic shape can be adjusted to direct most of the router's signal out into the room rather than losing it to the outside.

The Ez-12 Parabollic Reflector template is available as a free download from freeantennas.com.Watch the video first. The project can be done in under 30 minutes and has been shown to more than double signal strength.

Upgrade your computer's network adapter

If you're using an older computer that does not have built-in wireless capability and you are using a card-style network adapter, it may be time for an upgrade. Your router may be sending a strong signal, but if your computer's adapter is weak, you'll have a weak signal.

Older adapters send and receive signals based on older Wi-Fi standards denoted as 802.11 a/b/g. Today's faster standard is called "n" and offers data signal speeds up to 600 megabits per second compared with 54 Mbps for 802.11a/b and 11 Mbps for 802.11b.

Look for an 802.11n USB network adapter with an external antenna. It will be backwards compatible with computers built on earlier standards.  Expect to pay between $10 and $20. It may be wise to buy an adapter made by the manufacturer of your router to eliminate possible compatibility problems.

Add a wireless repeater

Signals weaken the farther they travel from the router. If your house is large, a wireless repeater or booster can be used at the halfway point between the router and the points where family members are using their devices.

A Wi-Fi repeater can double the coverage area of your existing Wifi network. It is a stand-alone unit that is not physically connected to the network.

Once again, it's probably best to buy a repeater made by the same manufacturer as your router.

Mon, 11 Jul 2011 07:54:30 -0700 OS X Lion is coming this week, how to prepare your mac. http://harmeijer.posterous.com/os-x-lion-is-coming-this-week-how-to-prepare http://harmeijer.posterous.com/os-x-lion-is-coming-this-week-how-to-prepare A great article from Christina Warren about how to prepare your Mac before instaling the new OS X LION.

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is right around the corner. Is your Mac ready?

About a week and a half ago, Apple released the Golden Master version of Lion to Apple Developers. The final version is expected tohit the Mac App Store soon — perhaps in the next few days.

Mac OS X Lion will bring lots of new features to the Mac operating system, including enhanced multi-touch gesture support, the ability to swipe between fullscreen apps and a new auto-save system.

Upgrading an operating system can be a time-consuming process — no matter how easy the manufacturer tries to make it. To limit the potential headaches, we’ve put together this guide that should help you get your Mac ready for Lion.

Step 1: Check for System and Application Updates

Systemupdate-550-1

Before upgrading to Lion, it’s important to check for any major software updates to both your operating system and to the programs and devices you use frequently.

A few weeks ago, Apple released Mac OS X 10.6.8. This release was intended to help prepare users for Mac OS X Lion; it’s a required update before you can download Lion from the Mac App Store.

To update your system, click on the Apple menu and select “Software Update.” Go ahead and install any of the updates for your system and official Apple applications.

Next, check for available updates in your frequently used programs. A nice feature of the Mac App Store is that it makes it easy to find updates for programs you’ve purchased or installed. Just click on the “Updates” button in Mac App Store’s toolbar.

For other apps, lots of developers utilize various update frameworks within their applications and can alert users, when launched, that an update is available.

One of my longtime favorite Mac utilities is AppFresh. AppFresh is a free tool that scours your system for apps, compares them to the latest versions online and lets you install updates all in one convenient place.

Certain apps and utilities will need to be updated to work with Lion, so it’s important to make sure you are running the latest versions.

If you are using an older printer or scanner, you might want to determine if the manufacturer has updated drivers or has a plan for Lion compatibility.

2. Clear Up Some Disk Space

Diskwave-640-1

Lion is about a 4GB download, and to be on the safe side, it’s probably a good idea to have at least 10 – 12 GB of free disk space before installing the update.

Using a program like DaisyDisk or DiskWave is an efficient way to figure out what files and folders are taking up the most space. You can either back up some of those files to other drives or to places such as Dropbox, or delete unused apps or downloads.

3. Check App Compatibility

With Lion, Apple is making some changes to the way programs work and interact. As a result, not all programs that run in Snow Leopard are going to work flawlessly in Lion.

Fortunately, most app developers are already preparing and releasing updates and many more will have updates ready as soon as Lion ships. To get an idea of what apps will work, what apps won’t and what apps might “mostly work,” check out the community wiki, RoardingApps.

RoaringApps is a database/compatibility wiki for apps and Mac OS X Lion. Users of the Lion Developer Previews and the Golden Master can comment on how well (or how poorly) apps work with Lion.

I’ve found this resource to be quite helpful, especially for workarounds and potential fixes for apps that might not be fully Lion compatible.

Step 4. Say Goodbye to PowerPC Apps

A larger issue for longtime Mac users is that with Lion, Apple is officially dropping support for Rosetta. Rosetta was a technology that Apple developed to help users run older PowerPC apps on Intel Macs. Over the last five years, most major Mac apps have been updated or rewritten to work natively as Intel Mac apps or as universal binaries.

A handful of older applications (older versions of Adobe Creative Suite and Quicken 2007 are two frequently cited examples) will not work with Mac OS X Lion. Users will need to find replacement apps, upgrade to newer versions or keep a second-hard drive around to boot into Snow Leopard when needed.

To find out if any of the apps you frequently use require Rosetta (and thus won’t work with Lion), you can follow the instructions Christopher Breen wrote for Macworld. The key is to look for any PowerPC apps. If you find them, prepare for them not to work in Lion and consider looking for replacements.

Step 5. Backup, Backup, Backup

The last step in preparing your Mac for Lion is to do a serious backup of your system disk. While operating system upgrades are less error-prone than in the past, there’s nothing worse than doing an update and then having a problem with accessing files or folders or installing software.

If you don’t already have a hard drive dedicated to backup, pick one up before you upgrade to Lion. Drive space is inexpensive these days. I was able to pick up a 1TB FireWire 800/USB 2.0 2.5″ hard drive for about $150 two weeks ago. My MacBook Pro only has a 250GB hard drive, so I can partition that drive and use it as both a Time Machine backup and with Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup, plus still have plenty of room for additional storage space.

Time Machine

Tm-setup

Fortunately, creating a backup of your system (something you should be doing regularly anyway) is easy in Mac OS X. When Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard was released in 2007, one of the flagship features was the debut of Time Machine. Time Machine makes it easy to make continuous backups of your files, folders and applications.

To get started with Time Machine, just open up the app in your Applications folder or from its panel in System Preferences. If you have never used Time Machine before, just plug in a hard drive, and tell Time Machine that you want to use that drive (or a partition on that drive) for your backups.

Use the Rounded Rectangle to draw a square with round corners. Hold down the Shift key as you drag to create a square.

Iphoneicon1

2. Open the Gradient and Color palettes. Make sure the square is still selected. Create a linear gradient with 3 shades of the same color, starting with the lightest color on the left hand side. To change a color stop, first, click on the color stop, and then click on the color you want on the Color palette. To add an extra color stop, simply click under the gradient slider.

3. Set the Stroke color to None.

Here’s how my palettes and square look:

Iphoneicon2

4. Make a copy of the square and paste it directly on top of the first square.

5. Draw a black-filled ellipse above the square.

Iphoneicon3

6. Select both the square and the ellipse, then open the Pathfinder palette and click on the Divide icon.

7. Choose Object > Ungroup, to ungroup the divided objects then. Delete the top of the ellipse and the bottom part of the square.

Iphoneicon6

8. Select the new top of the square and fill it with a linear black and white gradient. (White at the top grey at the bottom). Set the blending mode to Screen and the Opacity to 80%.

Iphoneicon7

The button should look a bit like this:

Iphoneicon9

Now you can add a logo or symbol to the button. Whatever you choose to add, make sure that is sits beneath the top gradient. I used a webding for the ambulance.

Iphoneicon10

9. The icons sit on a dark screen and generally have some text underneath them. Use Helvetica or Arial if you don’t have that font on your computer.

Iphoneicon11

10. Once you’ve made your icon you can select all parts and group them. Then add them to your iPhone vector image, or your web page if you want to use the icons for that.
